Abstract

Background: The present study examined the effects of fear and anxiety on obsessive-compulsive signs with the mediation of affects among students.
Methods: This research was a correlational study with structural equation modeling approach. 423 (192 males and 231 females) participants were selected using multistage sampling from among all students studying at Razi University in Kermanshah. They completed self-report measures of Behavioural Approach System/Behavioural Inhibition System Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-Expended Form and Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale. The raw data collected were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with maximum likelihood estimation using LISREL software (Version 8.80).
Results: The results showed that the theoretical models are a good fit. The Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) affected the obsessive-compulsive signs both directly and indirectly through negative affect. Besides, fear and guilt mediated the effect of fight-flight-freeze system and behavioral inhibition system on obsessive-compulsive signs, respectively,.
Conclusions: Affects play an important role in determining the effects of the brain behavioral system of fear (fight-fight-freeze) on Obsessive-Compulsive (OC) signs.
